The Hidalgo was destroyed by a fire in the morning of Tuesday 15 September. The vessel was on land, in storage in Cantiere Navalmare in Muggiano, between La Spezia and Lerici, when, for causes unknown, a fire broke out.

In a few short minutes the flames caused a dense cloud of smoke, which could be seen from a distance. The fire brigade intervened quickly and secured the area, avoiding the spread of the fire to the other vessels nearby. There were no injuries.

The Hidalgo was built in 1968 by Benetti and refitted in 2008. It was a steel vessel, 34 metres long, with a beam of 6.25 metres, capable of hosting 11 passengers and 5 crew members. It reached a maximum speed of 14 knots, while cruising speed was 11 knots, with an autonomy of 4 thousand nautical miles. It had two 590 hp diesel engines and a modern stabilisation system.
