A large fire has destroyed two luxury yachts in Newport, a beach town in the state of Rhode Island, United States. The two super yachts destroyed, which were in dry dock at Hinkley Yachts Services, were the motor yacht, Drinkability and the sailing yacht, Danneskjold.
Drinkability, 31 metres long, was built in 2017 and can hold up to 8 passengers and 4 crew members. One metre longer, at 32 metres, is the sailing yacht Danneskjold, built in 2009. On board is space for 6 passengers and another 4 crew members.
The incident occurred in the morning of 10 December. At 10:27 the Portsmouth Fire Service received a number of 911 calls reporting a boat on fire in the Hinckley Yacht Services shipyard. When the first team arrived, the severity of the situation became clear, with one vessel completely enveloped in flames, which were spreading to the nearby sailing yacht.
The fire fighters worked to contain the fire and avoid it spreading to other vessels in the area. In order to do this they attacked the flames from the base and the top, using a firefighting lift and foam. A thick cloud of smoke was visible for kilometres.
Other fire fighting teams from nearby towns arrived on the scene, helping their colleagues battle the flames. Many locals came to see what was happening. The images shared online by the American Fire Service and the local news showed how serious the incident was.
